Review

“In Carry On, Warrior, Glennon Melton’s honesty, thoughtfulness, and humor will keep readers racing through the pages—and set them thinking more deeply about their own lives.” (Gretchen Rubin, author of The Happiness Project and Happier at Home)

“Melton writes about spirituality, faith, creativity, and compassion without once surrendering her hilarious and hard-knocks identity.” (Elizabeth Gilbert, author of BIG MAGIC)

“Glennon embodies all that we want to be and fear we are not: she is authentic, funny, wise, loving, and resilient in the face of extraordinary challenges. But the magic of Carry On, Warrior is that by the time you finish the book, you realize you ARE all those things, and more. It is a book that actually makes you feel that you are loved and cherished. Has a book ever accomplished anything more marvelous than that?” (Vanessa Diffenbaugh, author of The Language of Flowers)

CarryOn, Warrior is a fierce, outrageous and laugh-out-loud book about emergingfrom addiction and living life at full-tilt.” (Geneen Roth, author of Women, Food and God)

“Funny, honest, and brave, Glennon Melton joins the ranks of Anne Lamott, Sara Miles, and Barbara Brown Taylor by giving her readers a precious gift:permission–permission to doubt, permission to believe, permission to struggle, permission to laugh, permission to tell the truth, and permission to do it allimperfectly. Carry On, Warrior takes its place among the best ofspiritual memoirs as the kind of book readers will want to return to again andagain. It reads like a conversation with a close friend, but impacts theheart like an encounter with the divine.” (Rachel Held Evans, author of Evolving in Monkey Town and a Year of Biblical Womanhood)

“An inspirational guide. Only by living in a state of loving vulnerability [was Melton able] to do what she desired most: touch others and be touched by them in return. Gentle words of wisdom from a woman driven by ‘senseless, relentless hope.’” (Kirkus Reviews)

“Refreshingly frank. Writing, or as she calls it ‘living out loud,’ is for Melton a bracing therapy to chase away loneliness, learn humility, and banish the fears of revealing the less than flattering sides of herself.” (Publishers Weekly)

“Glennon Doyle Melton is church and Carry On, Warrior reads like one of those old rollicking hymns that make you want to stand up at the end and shout, “Amen!” Life is indeed “brutiful” but Glennon’s humor, warmth, and honesty are profound reminders that there is beauty in our struggle. I can’t stop thinking about this book.” (BrenĂ© Brown, Ph.D. New York Times bestselling author of Daring Greatly: How the Courage to be Vulnerable Tra)

“First and foremost, Melton’s book is chock-a-block with great characters, and she’s number one. Melton pulls this off with the help of smart, funny, plain prose.”— (The Agony Column Bookotron.com)

“Carry On Warrior is like sitting down for a cup of coffee with a friend to share stories, laughter, and tears, mixed with a whole lot of “me too!”s and “I thought I was the only one.” You leave refreshed, renewed, and reminded that we aren’t alone in this. Not even a little. It isn’t the kind of book you put down and say “oh, that was good.” It’s the kind of book you put down, then go to the store and buy three more copies because you know you are going to run into someone who needs them.” (Examiner.com)

“Glennon’s writing is like a warm embrace. She shines that little light of hers over the whole wide mommy world, reminding us that it is OK – more than OK, our right – to be who we are, no apologies. And we as mothers matter. Because when you spend so much time focusing on everyone else’s needs, you often forget that you count too.” (Family Circle.com)

“Will melt your heart and inspire you in one fell swoop!” (Allparenting.com)

Carry On, Warrior is precisely the kind of book I hope the parents in my congregation will read. Melton is a richly gifted storyteller, and her shamelessness is the best kind, rooted in a refusal to believe that she is anything other than a forgiven and beloved child of God.” (Katherine Willis Pershey, associate Pastor First Congregational Church of Western Springs Illinois Christian Century Magazine)

“Glennon is…a fantastic writer and speaker — funny, real, open, passionate, heartfelt, and inspiring. I was inspired both personally and professionally by her presence, her talent, her humility, her message and her vulnerability.” (Mike Robbins Huffington Post, Good News Blog)

“Every once in a while, a writer turns up who is just that special. This is definitely the case with Glennon Doyle Melton. She’s a hit because everything she writes runs deep and true–and makes us laugh. Glennon’s like your favorite girlfriend: game to talk about anything, unafraid to take chances, and refreshingly honest about her past and present struggles.” (Parents.com)

“Sometimes, someone says exactly what you need to hear right when you need it most. Glennon Doyle Melton is that someone for me. I’ve been reading her lovely, funny new book, Carry on, Warrior—and when I got to the chapter titled, ‘Don’t Carpe Diem,’ I knew I’d found a spirit guide.” (Ellen Pocost Westchester Parent Magazine)

“Melton, God love her, has the courage and the resolve and the wit to show us all of her dimensions. She’s the anti-Instagram. Her words make the world a better place. And a healing place.” (Chicago Tribune)

“Glennon Melton is a natural storyteller, but it’s herradical honesty and compassion which enable this book to speak right to theheart of the reader. Glennon’s words change readers. Herstories are hilarious, sad, poignant, but they also push and pull at the wallswe’ve put up around ourselves. She honors the complexity of our modernlives, tells us it’s okay to be human, to ask for help, but also reminds us howgreat it feels to do good in the world. Carry On, Warrior is animportant portrait of contemporary womanhood, one that encourages us to takechances and love big.” (Megan Mayhew Bergman, author of Almost Famous Women)

It’s easy to look at our lives and think they are just one big ball of confusion and worry. But, one thing that Glennon Doyle Melton makes clear in Carry On, Warrior is that fact that love shines through regardless of your life’s circumstances. It’s important to let your love be the focal point of your life rather than the clutter and mess of day-to-day living. In these stories and essays, you’re going to find a wide variety of funny, heartwarming, and insightful chunks of wisdom. Doyle Melton’s storytelling is some of the most relatable I’ve ever come across. You feel like you are there with her has she’s telling these anecdotes directly to you. Again, the message behind most of these stories is that love will always win out. It’s up to you to be on the winning side.

Love is valuable in every aspect of your life, but so is taking charge. I read 27 Quick Life Transformation Tips: Simple & Effective Methods For Making This Your Best Year Ever earlier this year, and I’ve discovered insights about my life that I never knew existed. This book has helped me make positive transformations throughout this year, and I am so blessed to have found it in my search for greater peace, love, and understanding. The tips in the book are clear-cut and straightforward, but they offer the kind of deep, poignant wisdom that many of us need on a day-to-day basis. This book has helped me with my job, my family, my financial issues, and virtually every area of life that needs to be worked on. In addition to Carry On, Warrior, I take it with me everywhere I go.
I really feel that I need to review this is two parts to accurately convey my feelings about this book, so I’m going to start with the nitty gritty here–the writing. I find books written from blogs to be problematic. Writing a book and writing a blog are not the same thing and, taking pieces from a blog and putting them into a book tends to be unsatisfying for me. A blog post does not a chapter make. I’m sure there have been blogs to books that are able to avoid this misstep, but Carry On, Warrior is not one of them.

Melton’s writing is entertaining–in small doses. I suppose if I had had the luxury to read one chapter of this book every couple of days I might have found it more satisfying, but that was not the case. While there were passages, and sometimes entire chapters, that I found entertaining, the book as a whole was just too, well, bloggy.

Carry On, Warrior also fell into the chronology trap. On a blog, you can follow whatever timeline your heart desires–it is one of the freedoms a blog allows. However, you cannot apply that same principle in a book. Melton seemed to be all over the place with her chronology. For example, she talked about wanting to adopt. Then she talked about not adopting, then she finished the book with the entire adoption drama. I really just couldn’t keep things straight.

Okay, part number two. If you are a fan of Melton’s site, Momastery, you will like this book. In fact, I’d be surprised if you didn’t absolutely love it. And you should stop reading this review right now.

I will admit that I’m not a regular reader of her blog, but I "like" her on Facebook and sometimes I pop in to see what she’s writing about.

The Little Book of Hindu Deities PDF

The Little Book of Hindu Deities: From the Goddess of Wealth to the Sacred Cow Paperback – October 31, 2006
Author: Visit ‘s Sanjay Patel Page ID: 0452287758

From Publishers Weekly

Don’t mess with Kali, cautions Patel on the opening page of this arresting, innovative, entertaining book. Who knew the Hindu pantheon could be so much fun? Patel, an animator at Pixar studios, breathes new life into old mythology, telling the exploits of various deities while drawing us in—literally—with his joyous and unexpected full-color illustrations. In the introduction, he notes that he has always been influenced by Japanese animation, and his renderings bear the mark of the wide-eyed, large-headed, simple style that he so admires. The book is awash in color, with vivid saffrons, purples, fuchsias and oranges adding a lushness to the tales he recounts. Although some of the design work is too trendy to last—to wit, the oversized green and yellow polka dots that decorate some interstitial pages—it is precisely that faddish nod to the au courant that will make the book popular with teens and 20-somethings, who are the core audience (“Next time you’re angry with your parents, don’t turn into a monster,” Patel jokes after introducing us to Bhairava, a vengeful incarnation of Shiva). Both funny and informative, this is a fresh and breezy introduction to the Hindu gods. (Nov.)

My sister bought this book for my kids online. On the whole – the characterizations, the illustrations – everything struck the wrong note with me. I didn’t like it all.

Aug 5th 2010.
Based on comments, I am qualifying my post with specifics:

First the author’s background confirms my doubts. With an educational background in animation, it seems like he started with the illustrations and then added the text. His religious education is mostly informal, initiated by an interest in drawing gods and finding ‘entertainment’ in their exploits. Nothing against the author, but it sheds light on why it lacks reverence and why it won’t help teaching religion or the spiritual side of Hinduism to children.

The ‘funny’ tone is not definitely funny to me, a hindu, who has had her share of laughs based on the gods. Some of the jokes are outsider jokes not insider – if you see what I mean. Some are downright repugnant – I don’t want to repeat them – if you have read the book, I don’t think you will have a hard time finding any of those.

I think the book confuses the lay reader on Hinduism more than educating him. It could’ve at least used a basic 1-2 page introduction of devas (gods), God, main philosophies/views ( trimurti concept/Shaivism/Vaishnavism etc) before delving in.

I would not like my children to identify reverential figures with the illustrations from the book.

Some stories, such as the one of Bhairava, I had never heard before. I did a quick look on wikipedia and the story is not even mentioned in his page. The ‘Animal gods’ section, where I expected the most irreverence, surprised me – It was educative.

The Urban Sketcher – Techniques for Seeing and Drawing on Location is a useful book on drawing and watercolor painting technique illustrated with a selection of Marc Taro Holmes’ dazzling works. It’s certainly worth the $17.30 price (.com), especially the small watercolor section. I’m a bit puzzled, though, about who the intended audience is.

The book begins with an introduction to the concept of urban sketching and its inherent joys. Daily, habitual sketching – with quantity trumping concern for quality – will bring rapid skills improvement to most sketchers, Holmes says, and his own pleasure from the habit is apparent. “Urban sketching gets you out in the world looking for things worth drawing,” he says. “It puts you into the mindset where daily life is part of a larger artistic adventure.”

The first two-thirds of the 143-page book focuses on relatively basic drawing techniques that a beginner could grasp and practice without feeling overwhelmed. It begins with an introduction to the pleasures of urban sketching and essential materials used. Then, starting with still lifes, Holmes shows, step-by-step, how to use simple measuring and sight-sizing techniques to draw accurately. Very quickly he moves to applying those same principles to urban landscapes. Useful to beginners as well as more seasoned sketchers, he shows how to break down a complex subject into simplified shapes and angles.

Most of the drawing instructions and exercises are based on Holmes’ three-step process: a rough pencil “scribble” followed by a defining pen line and finally a brush pen to darken “shadow shapes,” giving dimension to the drawing. This process is reinforced throughout the book.
